Rooted in County Galway
Edel Garvey lives and works in County Galway, along the Atlantic coast of the West of Ireland.
Inspired by the landscape, tradition, and sense of connection found there, she creates heartfelt ceremonies that reflect each couple's unique story and journey together.
From spiritual weddings and handfastings to modern ceremonies filled with warmth, music, and laughter, Edel works closely with couples to create celebrations that feel personal, meaningful, and true to them.
A licensed solemniser in Ireland, Edel brings warmth, presence, and care to every ceremony she creates, helping couples mark one of life's most important moments in a way that feels relaxed, authentic, and memorable.
Edel is proud to be associated with the Anam Cara Fellowship, a community devoted to ceremony, connection, and Irish tradition.
“Through meaningful ceremony, sacred words, and heartfelt connection, I create spaces where people can honour life's important moments with presence, love, and authenticity.”
— Edel Garvey
Life Ceremonies
Marking every threshold with meaning, presence, and care
Life doesn't only ask us to mark one moment. It asks us again and again — at the welcome of a new life, at the renewal of a promise, at the binding of two hands in partnership, at the quiet closing of one chapter before another begins. Edel is a licensed solemniser and a trained celebrant, meaning she can hold space for all of it. Every ceremony is written from scratch, shaped entirely around the people and the moment it serves.
Why the solemniser credential matters
In Ireland, only a registered solemniser — listed on the HSE's Register of Solemnisers — can legally marry a couple. Most celebrants, however skilled, cannot. Edel is licensed by Celebrant Academy Ireland as a registered solemniser, which means your spiritual wedding ceremony is a fully legal marriage. No separate civil appointment. No registry office on the morning. Just the ceremony you want, where you want it, with the person you've chosen — and the legal weight it deserves.
Weddings
Edel's most requested ceremony and the one she has built her reputation on. As a licensed solemniser with Celebrant Academy Ireland, your wedding with Edel is a fully legal marriage under Irish law — no civil ceremony needed. Every word is written for you: your story, your values, the places and people that matter most. Ceremonies can take place anywhere: a Connemara clifftop, a Burren farmhouse, a family garden, or a venue that means something to you both.
Spiritual doesn't mean religious. Edel's ceremonies draw on Irish tradition, nature, and the meaning you bring — not doctrine. If you're not sure what you believe but you know you want your wedding to mean something, you're in the right place.
Baby Welcoming & Naming Ceremonies
The arrival of a new person is one of the greatest thresholds in any family's life. A welcoming ceremony — sometimes called a baby naming, a dedication, or a presentation — marks this arrival without the doctrine of a religious baptism. Edel will work with the parents (and grandparents, godparents, or chosen family) to create something that feels entirely right: a gathering of love, intention, and hope for the life ahead.

Vow Renewals
Whether you are marking ten years or forty, a vow renewal is an act of intention — a choice to recommit, consciously and publicly, to the life you have built together. Edel writes vow renewal ceremonies with the same care she gives weddings: bespoke, unhurried, specific to who you are now rather than who you were when you first married.

Handfastings & Commitment Ceremonies
Handfasting is one of Ireland's oldest ceremonial traditions — the binding together of hands as a symbol of partnership and promise. Edel incorporates handfasting into many weddings, but it can also stand alone as a commitment ceremony for couples who don't wish to legally marry, or who want a spiritual marking of their partnership separate from the legal formality. All couples welcome; all paths honoured.

House Blessings
Moving into a new home — whether it is your first, a fresh start after a loss, or a house that has waited a long time for the right family — is worth marking. A house blessing is a short, simple ceremony that walks through the spaces of a home, offering intention and welcome to the life that will unfold there. An old tradition with modern meaning.

Kind Words
“Edel married us last November 2025. We had a very small wedding of about 20 people. Edel was so warm and kind and incredibly thoughtful from the very beginning of our journey. She has a really special and gentle way of getting to know you both and weaving everything together to really represent and reflect you as a couple in the ceremony…”
— Grainne & Carlos, married November 2025
“Edel created the most beautiful ceremony for us. Every word felt like it was written from inside our hearts. Our guests are still talking about it months later.”
— Sarah & Liam, married August 2025, Clifden, Co. Galway

— Roisin & Mark, married June 2025, Ennistymon, Co. Clare
“We eloped to the Connemara coastline with just our closest friends. Edel was there with us, calm and present, and she made it the most meaningful day of our lives. I cried through most of it — in the best possible way.”
— Niamh & Ciarán, elopement ceremony, September 2025, Roundstone, Co. Galway
“Edel led the naming ceremony for our daughter and it was everything we hoped for. Non-religious but deeply meaningful — our parents were moved, our friends were moved, and we had something to mark the day that was truly ours.”
— Orla & Seán C., baby naming ceremony, Co. Mayo, January 2026
“Our ceremony at Kylemore was everything we hoped for. Edel wove our Irish-Australian story into something we'll treasure forever. She even included a blessing from my grandmother's favourite poem. Absolutely extraordinary.”

“Edel conducted our handfasting on a hillside in the Burren. She arrived early, checked everything was perfect, and brought a presence to the ceremony that was simply magical. Even the sceptics in our families were moved.”
— Aisling & Tom, handfasting ceremony, July 2025, The Burren, Co. Clare
Common Questions
Is a spiritual wedding ceremony legally binding in Ireland?
Yes. Edel is a licensed solemniser registered with Celebrant Academy Ireland and approved by the HSE's General Register Office. Your spiritual ceremony is a fully legal marriage — no separate civil ceremony needed.
What is the difference between a celebrant and a solemniser?
A celebrant can create and lead beautiful, meaningful ceremonies — but in Ireland, only a registered solemniser (listed on the HSE's Register of Solemnisers) can perform a ceremony that is a legally recognised marriage. Most celebrants are not solemnisers. Edel holds both roles: she is a trained celebrant for all life ceremonies, and a licensed solemniser for weddings. This means a wedding with Edel is legally binding — no separate civil appointment required.
Do you travel outside County Galway?
Absolutely. While Edel is based in County Galway, she regularly performs ceremonies throughout Clare, Mayo and the rest of Ireland, and is happy to travel further for the right occasion.
How far in advance should we book?
For wedding ceremonies, 6 to 12 months is ideal — especially for summer dates. For other life ceremonies and healing sessions, Edel typically has availability within 1–2 weeks.
Can we include our own rituals or readings in the ceremony?
Of course. Edel loves weaving in elements that are meaningful to you — handfasting, ring warming, family blessings, poetry, songs, or anything else that tells your story.
Do I need to be spiritual to have a non-wedding ceremony?
Not at all. Edel's ceremonies — whether a naming, a vow renewal, a handfasting, or a house blessing — are shaped by the people involved and the moment they're marking, not by any particular belief system. If it matters to you, Edel can hold it with care. You bring the meaning; she brings the form.
